I got a chance to review Nokia Lumia 720. Thanks to my friend Ankit for letting me play with his device for a while. In few words, I can sum up Nokia Lumia 720 can be termed as possibly the best combo of features and design so far. Nokia Lumia 720 offers you some premium features of flagship device like Lumia 920 and Lumia 820 in an affordable budget. Though it has its own limitations. Lets dig out what it has to offer and what can be disappointing for its users.
Nokia Lumia 720 Complete Review (Detailed Inspection)
- Design & Build
Nokia Lumia 720 has got a slim unibody design. 720 has got a slimmer polycarbonate body, in comparison to Lumia 920. It is also lighter than 920 and feels good in hand. Lumia 720 has got a 4.3-inch display and is just 9 mm thick and weighs approx 128 g. Seeing the design of Nokia Lumia 720 I had a random thought that this design factor should have been in Nokia Lumia 920.
Talking about the hard buttons, You have got volume, power/sleep, and camera button lined up in one side of the device. It was very easy to get the right button in action by just feeling it. Talking about the ports, it has got a microUSB port at the bottom. A microSD card slot and micro sim slot on the side on the other side. The top portion contains the headphone. The rear part has a 6.7MP camera embedded in the body with Carl Zeiss optics and LED flash. The bottom left corner of rear side is the speaker zone which emits fairly loud sound to alert their owners.
- Below the screen we have got the three standard Windows Phone buttons “Back button(if pressed for long acts as an app switcher), Windows button for home (long press for Speech mode) and the Search button. Search button calls up Bing search box. However it would have been nice if it had a customization option to set our own option. The top part contains the Brand name with the ear piece grill and front camera in the left corner.

Nokia Lumia 720 has got a 4.3-inch display. It sports a resolution of 480×800 pixels, with a 217ppi pixel density. Don’t go on the numbers here as the data doesn’t makes a bad impression in real life use.
It has got a decent viewing capabilities outside. The main thing with this Lumia is you can operate the touch with your hand in gloves, with a nail and with your finger as well :p. Overall impression of Lumia 720 display was very good without any sort of if and buts in mind.
Nokia Lumia 720 has got a 6.7-megapixel rear camera with Carl Zeiss optics. When talking about smartphones with great camera, Nokia is the winner. It takes decent outdoor pics in full lighting conditions. For low light snapping, the LED flash supports the camera very well, producing very good images. Images without flash were also good but not as 920 one’s. Though the price factor makes it a winner.
Camera features includes Auto, Close-Up, Night, Portrait, Night Portrait, Sports, Backlight, ISO, Exposure Value, White Balance, Aspect Ratio, and Focus Assist Light.
Smart Shoot features and also the panorama which was highly advertised in ads seems best in the advertisement only. Practical use was not very appealing and Nokia might need to work more on that. Nokia Lumia 720 has got decent recording capabilities with good audio quality. however it can’t be termed as very good. it also lacks some of the features like image stabilization which may be missed by most of you. Front camera also makes it presence in still photography and video recording in fair light condition. however low light performance was not good.
- Operating System
Nokia Lumia 720 is running on Windows Phone 8. This itself says the limitation of the device in terms of customization. Windows PLatform has its own environment. It offers the same type of experience as in big device on WP8. All the pre-installed apps and other WP8 features worked very well. Nothing much to say in this section.
Nokia Lumia 720 is good to go for day to day use. Though it comes with 512 MB ram which made me have my own assumptions. There is no any hogh end qaud core processor but still handles daily activities like browsing, music stuffs and office works like doc editting etc pretty well.
When tested for the gaming part which every smartphone owner would love to know about, I had mixed results. Games like Angry Birds, AE Bowling 3D (short and which don’t require much of hardware part) were good to play.
The 512 MB RAm caused the problem when I tested the device with games like Temple Run. It was very disappointing to see that it can’t handle even Temple Run.
Voice over call was very good and I didn’t have any type of words against it. It supports a microSIM and memory can be expanded via microSD card.
- Personal Verdict
Overall Rating : 4/5
Nokia Lumia packs up with a decent hardware and software combo overall wrapped in great unibody design. The only thing which was a remarkable drawback for me was the 512MB RAM. and if you just want a device for your daily purpose use and are not thinking of using it for high-end purposes “Nokia Lumia 720 is the device for you.”
