KOLKATA: Recent News suggests that Apple would be relaunching iPhone 4 8GB model in India. The reason apparently happens to be the decreased sales figure and lost market share in mid segment.
Apple iPhone 4 8GB model to be relaunched in India – A report.
Samsung is being termed to take over Apple shares, ever since Apple decided to pull over Apple iPhone 4. After iPhone 4, the other models which were launched by Apple were 4S, 5, 5S and 5C. This made the condition that if you wanna own an Apple iPhone now, you will at least be needing 53,500INR. This is not an achievable price for mid section consumers. iPhone 4 was priced at 26,500 earlier which acted as a good option for mid range buyers and thus made a good sale figure.
Also it was the only smartphone in the mid range section that was priced below 30,000INR, so it helped Apple retain its share in this section. Ever since its production was stopped, the consumers of this section were not left with any option rather than to go with other brands mostly Samsung. The next version of iPhone would have cost them double the amount they were paying at the moment.
“While there is still a latent demand for the iPhone 4 due to its attractive price in India, the model has lost favour in matured markets and hence it may not make sense for Apple to start fresh production since it follows economies of scale. Apple’s iPhone 4 8GB model used to rank amongst the top three selling models by unit sales and fight neck and neck with Samsung, but with its exit the company lost much ground,” said a senior executive at a top electronic retail chain.
Company’s decision of stopping the sale of Apple iPhone 4 models were to support the increment in sale figure of other new models. It though helped Apple gain value share but meant ceding ground in unit sales. Apple iPhone 5c could not even make the expected sale number.
Apple iPhone 4 alone used to account for 15-20% of sales compared with Samsung’s 50% in the mid segment (15,000INR to 20,000INR). As of now, Samsung took over apple by having a share percentage of more than 70% share which truly depicts the absence of any Apple competitor.
Apple’s market share in the Indian smartphone market peaked to more than 4% in October-December 2012 and January-March 2013 before falling to 1.4% in October 2013, according to CMR data. Samsung’s share, in contrast, rose 33% to 42% in the same period. – A report.
Thus to raise the sale figure in India, iPhone 4 8GB model would be relaunched. The price is also expected to be revised in favour of consumers with the expected price of new iPhone 4 8GB version as
15,000INR (red the update below) available through buyback and EMI options.
Update : Though the news of Apple iPhone 4 8GB version to be relaunched remains intact, however we discovered from trusted Apple sources that the price of iPhone 4 8GB version as earlier stated and mostly being reported as 15,000 Rs. turns out nothing else than a hokum. The real price of Apple iPhone 4 8GB version being relaunched would be 22,900 Rs. which means it offers a 4,000 Rs. price cut over the old price.
Also, the sources suggest that Apple’s distributors are giving up a scheme or we may say, They came up with a marketting gimmick to hold up and regain the market share by offering the retailers a scheme, where one will get 10 free iPhone 4 8GB model per 100 units they buy. Considering this and calculating with little business aspect, this allows the iPhone dealers to further lower down the price to around 20,000Rs.
Since the production of iPhone 4 was stopped last year around August – September, it seems Apple would be routing the unsold quota of the iPhone 4 8GB model from the globe to the Indian Market.
